The first of the double header was played by the two youth teams.   With both the Mavericks and Pumas youth dominating on defence, the score remained 0-0 at halftime. In the second half however, the Mavericks defence forced a fumble on the Pumas 1 yard line and recovered the ball in the end zone to record a touchdown. The resulting two point conversion was good. The Pumas also managed to record a touchdown, but was unable to convert. Going into the final minutes of the game, the score was 8-6 to the Mavericks, but the Pumas were driving hard down the field. Strong defence from the Mavericks prevented the Pumas from scoring, and the youth side recorded their first win of the season.

On the back of the fantastic result for the youth team, the East Kent Mavericks were determined to ensure the ‘double’ on the day. With the Mavericks rushing game dominating in the first half despite dogged defence from the Pumas, the Mavericks were up 28-0 before the Pumas started their first consistent drive of the day. The Pumas got within a yard of scoring a touchdown, but hard nosed defence pushed them back and on the last play of the half, the Pumas scored a field goal to make the score 28-3. With 7 touchdowns from 6 different players, the Mavericks dominated the game with particular highlights from TE and Mavericks chairman Glenn Lindley scoring a 25 yard receiving touchdown by spectacularly hurdling an opponent at the goal line, and Dave Jenkinson’s powerful running all day which culminated in him crossing the goal line 3 times, only to have two of them called back for penalties. The game finished 49-3 to the East Kent Mavericks to complete a very successful day for the organisation.
